Without knowing the term "storyteller" early in life, Sue remembers stirring up trouble by creating stories from "half truths" just to survive her predicaments. She was a mere six years old when stopped by a student patrol while she crossed the road to school. "Hey, you're jaywalking," he screamed, "and I'm gonna need to report you." Her heart was beating out of her chest, not knowing what jaywalking was and who was he going to report her to? He continued to write on his clipboard while scanning her face - "You're Sue Smith, aren't you?"
Well, she wasn't Sue Smith but this was when her storytelling began with just a nod of her head up and down and innocence in her eyes. This storytelling thing got her out of a lot of pickles but probably threw her in a few also. You'll have to invite her to your school to find out!
Having been a teacher for 32 years in the elementary school and conducting several workshops from storytelling, writing, and reading, she has adapted and created stories that range from folktales to personal tales with all the genres mixed inbetween those two bookends. She knows the importance of storytelling among children and has had a storytelling club in her schools for the last 25 years. She, along with her teacher sponsors have taught large groups of students of all ages the ancient oral spinning of tales. As soon as these children tell their first practiced stories in front of a classroom audience, they are immediately empowered to connect these stories with their own lives and make the story their own. She enjoys working with these kids using games, multimedia, and reading/writing strategies that engage them immediately.
Sue has been a storyteller and youth storytelling club sponsor for over 25 years She’s been a keynote speaker and workshop presenter at the UTSA Storytelling Festival and a frequent storyteller on the stages of the George West Story Fest, the Tejas Storytelling Festival, and SASA Story Tellabration™. She produced TSA’s Family Concert/Youth Workshops from 2015 – 2018. Currently the VP/Events for the San Antonio Storytellers Guild, she helped produce the Story Tellabration™ Festival reaching children in rural and lower socio- economic areas. She has served on TSA’s and TLA’s Storytelling Round Table Board. She’s most proud to have received the prestigious TSA John Henry Faulk Award along with the Colson-Herndon Educator Award for the advancement of storytelling in education.
Her teaching honors include:
* North East I.S.D. Superintendent Awards for her Storytelling Club Recognitions
* North East I.S.D. Overall Teacher of the Year
* North East I.S.D. Elementary Schools Teacher of the Year
* Stone Oak Elementary Teacher of the Year
* H-E-B Lifetime Achievement Excellence in Education Winner
* Trinity University Educator Excellence Award
Sue is anxiously wanting to share her love of stories and the art of storytelling with all of you. Please call/email her to book up to 6 presentations a day.
