The LightHouse Storytelling Camp 2018:
Stories to Choose From
Thank you to Martha Hamilton and Mitch Weiss, The Beauty and Beast Tellers granting me permission to tape a handful of stories they adapted for youth tellers from their book Stories in My Pocket. Please check out another favorite book written by them titled: Children Tell Stories: Teaching and Using Storytelling in the Classroom.
Choose one of these stories and listen to it. Your parents have the stories written with tips written beside each storyline. We'll practice your stories in camp!

Storytellers at their best
Eric A. Kimmel is not only one of the best children's book authors of folktales and original tales, but he's also an amazing storyteller and friend. If Eric is ever at your school or bookstore close by, make sure you ask him to play his banjo - I know!- he's multitalented! I've included his website and blog because he reads several of his books online. I love telling his adaptions to folktales because they are storytell ready. Try his stories out.

I've attached a YouTube from the 2017 National Storytelling Festival. This particular Olio has Oba William King telling a call and response story of Bird and Ant. I love the idea of creating a simple tale that can be repeated by the audience - perfect for my storytelling troupe! See for yourself kids! Try Oba's story out and then write your own version based on your own experiences!

As a Texas Storytelling Club Sponsor and past coordinator of our Texas Storytelling Youth Challenge, she's sent several Gold Metal winners to the National Storytelling Showcase each year. Check this video out of several very talented youth storytellers from all over the United States. They will all make you realize that you too can tell your tales.

David Novak is one of her favorite storytellers of all time! She's included two of his stories so you can see and hear for yourself how he uses his talents to entertain us with his versions of two very well known tales. Cats in the Cradle string formations are used in Jack and the Beanstalk while animated gestures are made throughout Itsy Bitsy. Try using your strengths and talents in your story. Can you wiggle your ears, lift your eyebrows, play an instrument, stare? Have fun with those movements and sounds if you think they fit?
Rabbit and Turtle's Race is a perfect fable to perform with two storytellers in tandem! Find folktales and fables that have two main characters, practice, and have fun telling together!
