Storytelling + Writing = Success!
Support student writers in their race for success through storytelling. Exciting activities and games will be shared that'll engage and motivate all writers. Expository and narrative strategies and ideas will be revealed to "ignite" the storytelling and writing potential of every child. Bring your pens and paper and let the games begin! Use these strategies, games, and fun lessons to collaborate with your teachers throughout the school year or have fun with them in your writing camp.

Integrating the art of storytelling into the curriculum not only supports our TEKS but builds confidence in reading, writing, and the boldness of applying the skills and strategies of reading and writing into TELLING from the heart. Participants will enjoy this lively workshop filled with connecting stories across the curriculum into long term memory and isn’t that what we all want? A story is a connection of cause and effect. Research tells us that stories, when based on emotion and when connections are made, move directly to our long term memory. How many times have you told someone else’s story thinking it was yours? The teaching of content in all curricular areas is greatly enhanced when the teacher and the students are allowed to tell stories. Research is based on Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences: The Theory in Practice, Eric Jensen’s Arts with the Brain in Mind, Patricia Wolfe’s Brain Matters: Translating Research into Classroom Practice, and David Sousa’s How the Brain Learns.
Title: A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words: Using inferencing skills, metaphors, truisms, and the creativity of each thinker
Audience: Grade levels: 2 – 8th teachers, specialists, librarians
Description: Reading and writing across the curriculum is imperative no matter what grade you are teaching and pictures are a perfect way to teach deep thinking using inferencing skills, cause and effect, metaphors, pre-reading, during-reading, and after-reading strategies, and truisms. Put all this together into a writing piece developed by the students and then a story presentation using the pictures in a themed museum created by the class. You can only imagine what each student will take back from this inspiring activity that will last a life time. Research is based on Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences: The Theory in Practice, Eric Jensen’s Arts with the Brain in Mind, Six Traits of Writing, Stephanie Harvey, and Ellin Keene. You’ll walk away with great ideas and spring boards to be used in the classroom immediately.
